Korea and Central Asia: New Areas of Cooperation

On 14–15 September 2026, Seoul hosted an international policy seminar entitled “From Shared Experience to Future Partnership: A Dialogue on Nuclear Safety, Sustainable Development and Strategic Cooperation”. The event was organised by the Hanns Seidel Foundation and the Institute of European Union Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. The Astana Civil Service Hub supported the event and facilitated the participation of an expert from Kazakhstan.
The seminar brought together experts and representatives of research institutions from Central Asia, the Republic of Korea, Japan and Mongolia. Participants discussed prospects for practical cooperation between Korea and Central Asia, the region’s experience in nuclear security and non-proliferation, and the responsible development of nuclear energy.
Particular attention was given to the energy transition, critical minerals, digital transformation, artificial intelligence and smart cities. Discussions highlighted the importance of sustained institutional ties, knowledge exchange and professional training for long-term cooperation.
Participants expressed interest in continuing cooperation through joint research, academic exchanges and the development of expert networks.
